As of till date, the honorable Chief Justice of Orissa is Dr. Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi since 20th July 2013. The court under his leadership continues to uphold the principles of justice and contribute to the legal landscape of the state. His date of retirment is 19 July 2024.

The Journey of Dr. Justice B.R. Sarangi: A Man of Law and Philanthropy

Dr. Justice B.R. Sarangi, born on July 20, 1962, in the village of Pantikharisasan, Odagaon, hails from the esteemed “Sarangi Family.” He is the youngest son of Late Banchanidhi Sarangi, an Ex-Financial Advisor in the Orissa Finance Service Cadre, and Late Sailabala Sarangi, a devoted housewife.

Married to Mrs. Nirupama Sarangi, a homemaker turned advocate of the Orissa High Court, his unwavering support allowed Dr. Justice Sarangi to navigate a successful professional life. Blessed with two daughters, Dr. Debarchita, an Assistant Professor in Prosthodontics, and Debasmita, a law graduate and academic achiever.

Dr. Justice Sarangi’s educational journey includes H.S.C. Examination and studies in Commerce at B.J.B. College, Bhubaneswar, followed by LL.B. & LL.M. from M.S. Law College, Cuttack, and a Ph.D. in Law from Sambalpur University. He joined the Bar in December 1985 and had a successful practice in the High Court of Orissa and the Supreme Court of India.

His career highlights include training under the esteemed Late Gangadhar Rath, a renowned constitutional lawyer, which laid the foundation for his successful legal career. Dr. Justice Sarangi handled cases spanning various domains, demonstrating equal zeal for each.

Recognized for his legal prowess, he received the “Haricharan Mukherjee Memorial Award” with a Gold Medal in 2002 from the then Hon’ble Justice P.K. Balsubramanyam, Chief Justice of Orissa High Court. On June 20, 2013, after 27 years of dedicated practice, he transitioned to the Bench, sworn in as a Permanent Judge of the Orissa High Court.
